MESAS 2022 - Modelling and Simulation for Autonomous System Conference in Prague

Prague, Czech Republic – The NATO Modelling & Simulation Centre of Excellence conducted the 2022 Modelling & Simulation for Autonomous Systems (MESAS) Conference from 20-21 October in Prague.  MESAS, organized and facilitated by the M&S COE, and in coordination with the Czech University of Defence, was held in presence as part of the Future Forces Forum, an International Exhibition for defence and security information exchange.  After two years being held virtually, MESAS brought together experts from both Europe and the United States to present their projects concerning autonomous systems.  More than 22 scientific papers were presented from the military, academia, and industry partners focusing on the use of modelling and simulation for the development and testing of autonomous systems, use of artificial intelligence and practical use cases.  The conference hosted presentations from the Czech Republic, Italy, Germany, Greece, and the United States to name a few.

The presentations selected for MESAS are vetted by a scientific panel and are subsequently published in the Springer Proceedings publication.

The MESAS 2022 conference was officially opened by the NATO M&S COE Deputy Director, Lieutenant Colonel Brad Koerner (USA), followed by a welcome speech from Colonel Jan Mazal, the Chief of the Military Robotics Department of the Czech University of Defence.

LTC Koerner emphasized the importance of the work being advanced for Artificial Intelligence  and autonomous systems and how relevant these projects are in the context of world events.  The NATO M&S COE is committed to working on these important topics in conjunction with NATO and its Nations through military, academic, and industrial organizations to develop synergies between projects and forming collaborative approaches for future development.

The NATO Modelling & Simulation Centre of Excellence is dedicated to the promotion of Modelling & Simulation in support of operational requirements, training and interoperability. The Centre act as a catalyst for transformation through the involvement of NATO, governments, academia, industry, operational and training entities, by improving the networking of NATO and nationally owned Modelling & Simulation systems, the cooperation between Nations and organizations through the sharing of Modelling & Simulation information and developments and serving as an international source of expertise for transformation in the related domain. https://www.mscoe.org

NATO Centres of Excellence are nationally or multi-nationally funded institutions accredited by NATO. They train and educate leaders and specialists from NATO member and partner countries, assist in doctrine development, identify lessons learned, improve interoperability and capabilities, and test and validate concepts through experimentation. They offer recognized expertise and experience that is of benefit to the Alliance and support the transformation of NATO, while avoiding the duplication of assets, resources and capabilities already present within the NATO command structure. Although not part of the NATO command structure, they are part of a wider framework supporting NATO Command Arrangements. [source https://www.act.nato.int/centres-of-excellence]
