15th edition of the NATO Computer Assisted Exercise (CAX) Specialist Certification Course

Rome- From 10-14 July 2023, the NATO Modelling & Simulation Centre of Excellence (NATO M&S COE) conducted the 15th edition of the NATO Computer Assisted Exercise (CAX) Specialist Certification Course at the “Adriano De Cicco” barracks in Rome. This event is historically condcuted in cooperation with the NATO Joint Warfare Centre (JWC) and aimed to prepare NATO and National CAX specialists to be part of a Response Cell for major NATO exercises.

The 2023 edition of the course proved to be highly successful, with 18 students from 7 countries completing the training. The strong international participation underscores the growing need for CAX specialists within the alliance and highlights the importance of providing education to meet this demand. The M&S CAX Specialist course directly supports the increasing level of ambition in NATO CAX/Command Post Exercise (CPX) exercises, where the use of the Joint Theater Level Simulation – Global Operations (JTLS-GO) system is a fundamental prerequisite for planning, delivering, controlling, and steering exercise outcomes. Exercises are the pinnacle of NATO training and serve as the foundation for developing the Alliance’s capabilities to address current and future security challenges.

M&S COE is committed to ensuring that students leave the course with a strong foundation in quality assurance and testing. Students will also learn best practices as outcomes of recent NATO exercises.

Colonel Francesco Pacillo (Italian Army), the NATO M&S COE Director, recognizing the commitment of the JWC instructors, course Director and organizing team, pointed out the value of such a technical and popular course. He expressed his gratitude for the cooperation with the NATO Joint Warfare Centre (JWC) and stated that the Center of Excellence is fully committed to the continuous improvement process of its current courses, using all the available tools at the national and NATO level.

The success of the 15th edition of the NATO CAX Specialist Certification Course demonstrates the ongoing commitment to enhancing the skills and expertise of CAX specialists within the Alliance. This collaborative effort between the NATO M&S COE and JWC ensures that NATO exercises continue to evolve and adapt to meet the ever-changing security landscape.

The next big appointment will be the 18th NATO CA2X2 (Computer Assisted Analysis, Exercise, Experimentation) Forum, that will take place from 3 to 5 October 2023 in Rome (Italy).
