Immersive Training Technology (ITT)

ITT – Session Setup Environment

CONCEPTS

The Immersive Training Technology is the state of the art Tool to support education, training and Senior Leader decisional support. Based on the most recent virtual immersive technologies, the project aims to reproduce a Virtual Operation Headquarters, a synthetic environment where the training audience will be attending a blended asynchronous/synchronous training and exercises. A web-based application is intended to be re-designed and developed to support rapid prototyping to train personnel through a Virtual World environment, based on gaming technology (preferably open source) integrated via next generation I\O systems and the use of Intelligent Agents driven by Artificial Intelligence, taking inspiration from a Military Research Project called SIMJOC, from Genova University.

ITT – User Specific Session

In order to set up your own user profile and experience a more interactive user involvement, please click on the button below and follow the instructions provided (future implementation)

Initial concepts of ITT will be:

  • Learn ROE, Directives, Cultural awareness
  • Command Post/HQ Familiarization (layout, workspace, tools, security-emergency-safety drills, standard tasks)
  • Pre deployment Command Post team building and cross functional team training
  • Pre-handover familiarization
  • Individual and collective remote teaming
  • Decision Support extended capabilities

Enhanced Operational Readiness (e-OR)

The level of complexity of the contemporary fluid environment demands, at any time, the possibility to access to an education, training and rehearsal framework in order to be able to prepare and deploy forces in an operational environment, maximizing their capability to be able to accomplish with the missions and required tasks in the shortest time.

Regarding NATO HQ staffs the M&S CoE, supporting ACT, proposed an approach to support the development of Staff operational readiness preparing transitioning personnel during the HQ pre-deployment and deployment phases. This approach exploits Modelling and Simulation (M&S) Innovative Immersive tools within a cloud-based as a service M&S education, Training, Exercise and Experimentation framework suitable to be fully integrated in the future within a Federated Mission Networking environment and being able to provide Leadership Development, Organizational Effectiveness and an effective learning Methodology.

The Enhanced Operational Readiness concept, proposed by the M&S CoE, aims to design, develop and implement a framework where is it possible to make available M&S tools and Services to leverage Education, Training and Exercise opportunities to improve the “train as we fight and fight as we train” approach, within the Human Capital Enanchement (HCE) Lines of Effort. In addition, the same framework will be suitable to Experiment innovative approaches and technology to keep going the technology advance.

ITT Development Framework

DEVELOPMENT

The development is currently driven by building a training place which enables advanced VOIP communication, briefing (MS Power Point) capability, data and file handling, video streaming of external sources, virtual desktop (VMware), screen share, SCORM course integration, small scenario trainer, multiple parallel instances of the whole infrastructure / briefing tent and student activity tracking.

GOAL

The desired end-state is a browser-based platform for capturing NATO deployable Headquarters (HQ) and HQ Buildings with the following initial functions:

  • Avatar based interactions
  • User profile management
  • Multiple navigable environments including CPs, HQs, and CJOCs
  • Integrated Voice Over IP (VOIP) or Voice over Distributed Interactive Simulation (DiS) communications
  • Real time Messaging system
  • Access\integration to physical and virtual systems or resources via virtual workstations over a cloud-based system
  • Access\Integration with a Learning and Content and Management System, SCORM compliant, for users profile, courses and content development
  • Synchronous presentation / briefing capability
  • Back office function to create different HQ layouts
  • Access to third party virtual immersive applications
  • Access to collaborative realtime tools/applications (i.s. webex, google docs, holoport meeting and so on..)
